Bio
The Dawn Roar
The Quiet. The Loud.
Indie rock band The Dawn Roar is the brainchild of Gloucester based singer-songwriter Paul Johnson. Previously known for his releases as The Drawing of the Three, Paul pressed pause to start a family. During which time the dawn hours provided fertile time to write in isolation, songs born from the whispers of the morning. Songs that scream up to the clouds. The dawn, the roar. The quiet, the loud. Intimate heartfelt indie rock.
Paul’s songs touch on themes of love and loss, the relationships we build and break. They reflect on mortality and making the most of our lives, protecting our mental health and finding inner peace, and the importance of developing community.
His regular band members include Lee Jenkins (drums), Rachel Knowles-Matthews (violin/guitar) and Nick Tilling (bass). Their influences include Radiohead, The National, Elliot Smith, Pixies, Feeder and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Their sound contrasts angular distorted guitars and mellow acoustics with catchy melodies and soaring vocals.
Paul and his band are known locally for their tight, focused and intimate live shows at pubs and bars, gaining support slots at the Guild Hall (Gloucester), The Fleece and Louisiana (Bristol), and joining festival line ups at Lakefest and Sportbeat. They continue to work hard to build a loyal live following.
It all started with a love for music, Paul’s first love in fact was Radiohead’s OK Computer. That classic album helped him get through his parent’s divorce when he was a teenager and steer him towards writing songs, forever changing his life. He listens to music all the time and finds flow in the process of writing songs. Comfort in sound, to reference another of his favourites. By distilling his feelings into words and music, he can escape, reflect, and cope with whatever life throws at him. Through his music he hopes to help others who feel like him, those who need some escape, a release. Music is healing and can be life changing.
Paul is releasing music as The Dawn Roar, and the debut single ‘Starless Sea’ dropped in the summer of 2023. Further singles are planned in 2024. Previous releases were as The Drawing of the Three, including Monument EP (‘Fear of Flying’ got airplay on BBC Introducing), Broken Walls LP, Explosions in the Sky EP, and Invisible EP.
